Diarrhea is loose, watery stools which occur more than three times a day. It typically lasts a day or two and goes away on its own without special treatment.
Diarrhea can cause dehydration and may be accompanied by abdominal pain nausea, bloating and the urgent need to use the bathroom. It can be short term (acute), lasting less than four weeks or long term (chronic) lasting more than four weeks. Acute diarrhea is usually related to a parasitic, bacterial or viral infection. Chronic diarrhea is usually related to disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome or celiac disease.
Treatment generally is aimed at replacing fluids in order to prevent dehydration. Depending on the cause, typical treatments are from antibiotics, medication to stop the diarrhea, change in diet and letting the condition run its course without treatment.
